Getting Started

  • How long does licensing take?
Most candidates complete Technician prep in a few focused weeks with regular practice testing.
  • How much does it cost?
Expect a VE exam session fee and, for new licenses, an FCC application fee.
  • Is Morse code required?
No. Morse is optional and not required for current U.S. license exams.

Exam Logistics

  • Can I take multiple elements in one session?
Usually yes when time permits and VE procedures allow.
  • What do I bring?
Photo ID, FRN, payment, and any prior CSCE documents if applicable.
  • Are accommodations available?
Yes—contact the VE team in advance to arrange support needs.

After You Pass

  • When is my call sign issued?
After VE submission and FCC processing, it appears in ULS.
  • Do upgrades require FCC payment?
The FCC fee treatment differs by transaction type—always verify current guidance.
  • What should I do first on-air?
Program local repeaters, check into a net, and begin building consistent operating habits.
