HAM Exam Day: What to Expect

A practical timeline to keep your paperwork, preparation, and follow-up on track.

We welcome every operator, from brand-new Technicians to seasoned Extras.

  • Technician through Extra coaching
  • Study groups & online office hours
  • Volunteer Examiner testing prior to meetings

Two Weeks Out

  • Confirm date, time, and exam format.
  • Request accommodations early if needed.
  • Run full-length timed practice exams.

One Week Out

  • Focus review on missed question domains.
  • Prepare for possible next element attempt.
  • Reconfirm travel or remote session setup.

48 Hours Out

  • Prepare FRN, identification, and required records.
  • Pack approved calculator and writing supplies.
  • If remote, test camera, audio, and lighting.

Exam Day

  • Arrive early for check-in and rule briefing.
  • Follow VE instructions for devices and materials.
  • Attempt additional element if eligible and prepared.

After the Exam

  • Monitor email for FCC and VE notifications.
  • Pay required FCC fee promptly when applicable.
  • Verify call sign posting in ULS before transmitting.
