Field Day 2024. Plan to participate!

Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 40,000 Hams and non-Hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio. Field Day is always a fun time to drag out the gear and operate away from the comfort of the Shack. As always, Field day will be on the fourth weekend in June - this year the event will be on the 22nd and 23rd 2024 from 1pm on Saturday to 1pm on Sunday. This is 24 hours of racking up the contacts across all bands and modes. You can participate on CW, SSB, FM and operate some Digital modes. Points are earned by the type of contact. Extra point awards are given for Digital modes and for operating outside of the normal street power we normally enjoy. Solar power, generator power and battery power all enjoy a multiplier for point awards. You do not have to be a Ham Radio Operator to participate. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend and learn about Amateur Radio and also experience what it is like under the supervision of a licensed radio operator. This 24-hour event requires coverage of all available hours and is important to points accumulation. Set aside these dates and be prepared to help provide the round the clock coverage for this event.

Here is the What, Who, How, When and Where.

What is Field Day? ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, thousands of radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN! It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar. The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditionsARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. Who? Who can attend Field Day?

The simple answer - Anyone can attend!.

If you are not a HAM radio operator but want to know more aobu the hobby, all you have to do to show up at the event location! It is that easy. At this year's event, there will be a number of sites setup where local licensed amateur radio operators will have their own stations setup at a campsite. This is a really casual event and the licensed operators will gladly describe what equipment they are operating and demonstrate their approach to making contacts around the world. They can also explain why Amateur Radio is important to the Community in critical weather and other emergency situations. For those interested in a hands-on approach, there will also be a Get On The Air (GOTA) station available for you to actually make a contact yourself under the supervision of a licensed radio operator. If you are a licensed operator and would like to participate with your own equipment, please email OBARC president Stephen Shahan at ki5utq13@gmail.com.
